Exterior front doors: types and features

Curb-appeal, security and energy efficiency are all features of a quality front door. When shopping for a new one, it’s important to weigh these three factors. Here’s some information that can help you choose a new exterior door.

Different types of exterior doors

There are five materials commonly used to fabricate exterior doors. Each has its advantages.

  1. Steel doors offer rigidity, security and require little maintenance. They don’t expand or contract when the temperature fluctuates, and they complement every architectural style.
  2. Aluminum doors, like steel ones, won’t warp or expand due to changing weather conditions. Aluminum is lightweight, inexpensive and energy-efficient.
  3. Fibreglass doors can be made to look like wood or other natural materials. This material is incredibly durable, pest-resistant and can be painted any colour.
  4. PVC doors are the most affordable on the market. They’re also water-resistant and energy-efficient. Vinyl comes in a range of colours and natural-looking wood grains.
  5. Wood doors are charming and can add a classic look to your home. However, this material has drawbacks. It’s porous, which means it absorbs moisture and will expand, warp and rot if not maintained with regular painting or staining.

Adding glass to your exterior door

Adding glass to your door will beautify your entranceway and allow more light into your home. However, keep in mind the type of glass you choose can impact the door’s overall energy efficiency. It’s best to opt for a product that offers superior insulation.

Besides adding glass to the door itself, you can install sidelights, which are vertical windows on one or both sides of the door. You can also add a transom, which is a horizontal glass panel above the door.

Overhead protection

The sun’s UV rays and precipitation can damage your door over time. Protecting your door from the elements will prolong its lifespan and help keep it looking new. Consider adding a verandah or installing an awning above your door.

Choosing colours

An exterior door in a bold hue will add a pop of colour to your home. However, you may want to avoid using colours such as black or dark brown. Dark colours absorb harmful UV rays rather than reflect them, and doors painted with lighter colours reflect more sunlight and therefore have a longer lifespan.
