YOUR GUIDE TO WINDOW WARRANTIES

If you’re thinking about installing a new window in your home or replacing old ones, it’s important to ensure you choose a high-quality product that can be installed by reliable and experienced professionals. However, you should also carefully assess the warranty that comes with your new windows, since even top products that are properly installed can sometimes fail.

What does a window warranty cover?

The issues covered by a window warranty vary depending on the manufacturer. However, you can generally expect the following to be covered under a typical warranty: 1) Materials. A window frame is usually covered for a specific amount of time, such as 10 years, depending on the material used. If it gets damaged within that period, the cost of repairing or replacing the window materials is usually covered under the warranty. Our windows have a lifetime warranty on the products that are being installed in our customer’s home offered by North Star Manufacturing. 2) Defects. If a window is poorly constructed or defective, it can usually be replaced under the warranty. Such issues can include discolouration on the frame or major imperfections and scratches on the glass. Our windows are coloured on the exterior with a laminate finish which reduces the chances of any discoloration. 3) Seal failure. Double-pane windows often have air or gas sealed between the panels of glass to provide insulation. If the seal breaks, this can decrease the window’s energy efficiency and allow moisture and dust to build up between the panes. The cost of repairing this problem is generally covered under the warranty. On North Star products, they offer a lifetime warranty on the sealed units. 4) Installation. The manufacturer won’t usually cover problems that arise due to improper installation. However, if you have your windows installed by professionals, the company may offer a warranty on the labour for a specific period of time. Canadian Comfort offers our customers a 10 year labour warranty on the products we install. You will be covered for 10 years with anything to do with the actual installation. Keep in mind that most window warranties come with a list of exclusions. Generally, broken glass and foggy windows not caused by a seal failure aren’t covered. In these cases, it’s best to contact your home insurance provider, as they may offer some coverage. Questions to ask about a window warranty

To avoid unpleasant surprises down the road, there are a few questions you should ask about the warranty before you purchase a window, notably: How long are the windows covered under the warranty? Is the warranty transferable to the new homeowner if I sell my house? Is installation covered under the warranty? Does the warranty still apply if I install the windows myself? Remember, windows are an important investment in your home. Taking the time to understand the warranty terms will help ensure you purchase the right product. Window installation in Ottawa
