5 TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOUSE COOL THIS SUMMER

In summer, it’s tempting to let your air conditioner run all the time. However, this can be both impractical and expensive. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to help beat the heat. Here are five tips for keeping things cool at home without running an AC or fan.

SHADE YOUR WINDOWS

Block the sun by strategically planting trees or bushes in front of your windows or by installing an awning. This also has the advantage of creating a little bit of privacy. CLOSE THE BLINDS

The sun streaming in may make for a bright and inviting space, but it can heat up a room significantly. To keep your house cool during the day, keep your blinds or curtains closed when it’s sunniest. Blackout blinds in a neutral tone are the best at keeping the light — and heat — at bay. LET A BREEZE IN

Open your windows in the evening or any time the outside air is cooler than the inside air. You’ll cool the space and encourage refreshing drafts to breeze through the house. To increase airflow, consider using fans to create a wind tunnel and move cool air through different rooms. AVOID CREATING EXTRA HEAT

Avoid using heat-producing appliances like ovens, dryers or dishwashers on the hottest days of the year. Alternatively, you can opt to use them only in the evening or once the temperature has come down. It’s also a good idea to eat more cold meals like salads, sandwiches and cold plates to keep your body temperature down and your kitchen cool. Or, keep the heat outside and cook your meals on the grill. REPLACE YOUR WINDOWS

Old windows can cause your home to be cold and drafty in the winter. In summer, however, they can be a contributing factor in the hot air settling inside. If your windows are over 15 or 20 years old, consider replacing them with new, energy-efficient ones. For best results, choose a product with a low-E coating.
