Cross ventilation is an effective way to improve air circulation and maintain a comfortable indoor environment in your home. In addition to helping remove stale air, pollutants, and odour, cross ventilation fills your home with fresh outdoor air. Of the many window styles that are particularly well suited for maximizing cross ventilation, we offer five suggestions with the use of an easy-to-remember acronym: B-CADS.
B: Bay and Bow Windows
Bay and bow windows both project outward from the wall and therefore create multiple angles for air to enter and exit your home. This design can help capture breezes from different directions and enhance cross ventilation.
Bay windows are comprised of three parts: a fixed picture window in the middle and two 45-degree angled windows. For maximum ventilation, both side windows should be operational. Casement windows are common in bays.
Bow windows are comprised of four to six windows with a small angle (10 to 15 degrees) that creates a rounded protrusion. All the windows can open for maximum ventilation, but some can be stationary if you wish. Once again, casement windows are a common choice.
C: Casement Windows
Casement windows are an excellent choice for promoting cross ventilation. They open outward, either to the right or to the left, like a door. They angle open to 90 degrees to catch and direct airflow into your home. Casement windows are also an energy-efficient choice and can drastically reduce the amount of heat lost from your home in the colder months.
A: Awning Windows
An awning window is hinged at the top and opens outward horizontally, which means you can open it when it’s raining without worry of rain getting in. Awning windows are often placed higher than other types of windows and are popular in bathrooms and kitchens. The high placement allows for a maximum of light and ventilation without compromising privacy. Awnings are also a smart choice for smaller rooms where minimal ventilation is required.
D: Double-Hung Windows
Double-hung windows feature two sashes, or sections, that can both be opened or pushed over top of one another to create a single opening. The tilting capabilities of these windows make them easy to clean and offer a variety of ventilation options. When both sashes are tilted open, warm air can escape through the top while cooler air enters through the bottom.
S: Sliding Windows
Sliding windows are a well-known style of window. Double slider lift-out windows have two moveable sashes that slide for ventilation and can be removed for cleaning. Double slider slide- &-turn windows are not removable. Rather, once they have been slid, the panes can be cranked open vertically like a casement window. This double motion allows for customized ventilation throughout the day. It also makes window cleaning easier.
