How to get a Canada Greener Homes grant
Thanks to a new federal program, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your home’s windows and doors, and you may be eligible for up to $5,000 in grant money. The Canadian government announced the Canada Greener Homes Grant in May 2021 to encourage homeowners to retrofit their homes to make them more energy-efficient. Here’s how you can apply.
Not all homeowners are eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant. You must prove you live in your home permanently, and landlords who live offsite don’t qualify. The home must be one of the following types of structures:
- A single or semi-detached house
- A row house
- A townhouse
- An all-season cottage
- A mobile home
- A houseboat
- A condominium in a low-rise building
Moreover, First Nations band councils, land claims organizations and Indigenous housing management groups can apply for the grant. New homes aren’t eligible, as structures must be at least six months old.
What does the grant cover?
The grant covers a variety of home retrofits that can improve your home’s efficiency. Items such as insulation, energy-efficient furnaces and solar panels are all on the list.
Additionally, the grant will reimburse you for up to $5,000 if you replace your windows with Energy Star certified models. Sliding-glass and hinged doors are also included, with or without sidelights or transoms. You must purchase the windows and doors in Canada or a Canadian online distributor. How can you apply?
You can apply by visiting the Canada Greener Homes Grant website and filling out the online form. You’ll need to get home evaluations done by an official EnerGuide representative before and after you replace the windows. The grant will also cover the cost of the evaluations, up to a total of $600.
The Greener Homes Grant program is available to Canadian homeowners for the next seven years.
What’s the downside?
The government won’t give you any money until after your renovations and evaluations are complete. This means you’ll need to pay for everything out of pocket first, then wait for the grant money to arrive. Plus, there’s no guarantee you’ll receive the maximum allowable amount for upgrading your windows. The findings of the evaluation after the work is done will determine the final amount for the replacement.
