WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE-, DOUBLE- AND TRIPLE-GLAZED WINDOWS?

single - , double - and triple - glazed windows

If you’re thinking about replacing the windows in your home, there are several decisions you’ll need to make. One of these involves whether to choose single-, double- or triple-glazed windows. Here’s what you should know about these various options.

THE TYPES

A single-glaze window is one that has one pane of glass. Double- and triple-glazed windows respectively have two and three panes. Between the panes is a layer of gas that provides insulation to help trap heat and slow its escape from your home. Single-, double- and triple-glaze windows all have benefits and drawbacks, but not all are suitable for the climate in southeastern Ontario.

  • Single-glazed windows These windows are the least expensive type available. However, because they have only one pane of glass, there’s no space to add insulating gas. Consequently, this option doesn’t provide the insulation needed to withstand Canada’s cold winters. You’ll generally find single-glazed windows on old homes that haven’t had their windows upgraded yet.

  • Double-glazed windows Considered the standard for new homes and replacement windows, double-glazed windows offer better insulation and noise reduction than older, single-paned models. They also provide more security, as two panes are harder to break than just one.

  • Triple-glazed windows Considered top of the line when it comes to new and replacement windows, triple-glazed windows offer even more insulation, noise reduction and security than double-glazed windows. Triple-glazed windows are heavier than single- and double-paned windows. Our team will make sure they are suitable for the structure of your buildings. Upgrading to triple-glazed windows may seem expensive in the short term, but in the long run, their superior insulation will save you money on your heating and cooling bills throughout the year.
